SEASONAL JOB VACANCY NOTICE

Title: Carpenter

Work Location: Brooklyn

Duration:  9 months, March 2024 – December 2024

Salary:     $53.58 per hour/35 hours per week

Number of Positions: 4

NYC Parks is the steward of over 30,000 acres of land — 14 percent of New York City — including more than 5,000 individual properties ranging from Coney Island Beach and Central Park to community gardens and Greenstreets.  We operate more than 800 athletic fields and nearly 1,000 playgrounds, 1,800 basketball courts, 550 tennis courts, 67 public pools, 51 recreational facilities, 15 nature centers, 14 golf courses, and 14 miles of beaches.  We care for 1,200 monuments and 23 historic house museums.  We look after 600,000 street trees, and two million more in parks. We are New York City’s principal providers of recreational and athletic facilities and programs.  We   are home to free concerts, world-class sports events, and cultural festivals.

Seasonal employees hired for 6 months or longer are eligible for healthcare benefits.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

•           Under supervision, perform installation and repair work involving rough, finish and general carpentry.

•           Install, repair and replace flooring, partitions, roofs, window frames and sashes, door frames and doors and other related components of buildings and structures.

•           Install, repair and replace boardwalks, fences and screens.

•           Construct and repair toolboxes, movable and fixed sashes, doors and wooden office furniture, playground, park and school equipment.

•           Build and rebuild truck cabs.

•           Utilize and operate both hand and powered woodworking equipment.

•           Build and repair various types of ice ladders.

•           May work from plans and sketches.  Maintain accurate records.

•           May supervise assigned personnel.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

1.         Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a Carpenter acquired within the last 10 years; or

2.         Three years of experience as describe in “1” above, plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade or vocational high school to make up a total of five years of acceptable experience.  Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade or vocational school training.

PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

1.         Excellent communication skills.

2.         Proficiency with computer software and the ability to use handheld devices.

3.         Valid New York State driver license.

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.

Fees: Hired candidates may be subject to a processing fee of $96.00.  Hired candidates who are not currently employed by the City will be subject to an $88.25 background check fee.
