We are deeply saddened to announce the passing on May 28, 2024, of our dear friend, brother, and former Vice President and Trustee of the New York City District Council of Carpenters, Gene Maiello. Born in 1938, Gene was a veteran whose dedication to his country and the union left a lasting impact. During his 38 years as a union carpenter and 26 years of outstanding commitment and leadership as a union officer, he was well respected by his colleagues and known as an all-around good man who wore his union pride on his sleeve. Gene held many roles during his career including Business Manager, Financial Secretary, Recording Secretary and Vice President, within his local unions, Local 2155, Local 1994, and Local 2090, which later became Local 2790. He was subsequently elected Vice President of the New York City Carpenters Union in 1999, a prestigious role he held until his retirement in 2002. Gene’s legacy as a fine craftsman and devoted advocate for safety, fair wages, and the advancement of carpenters’ careers will undoubtedly endure, shaping the future of union carpenters for generations to come. May his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew him.
