1. Under the State’s 421-a tax incentive program, wage theft ran rampant. A single audit of a 2019 BLDG Management project revealed over $32 million in stolen wages; the total amount of wages stolen on the thousands of 421-a projects may never be known. Last year, the District Council of Carpenters successfully fought to include strong enforcement mechanisms in the new 485-x tax incentive program, so that if a developer commits wage theft, they may have their tax break revoked. Will you commit to using these enforcement mechanisms to proactively hold developers who steal workers’ hard-earned wages accountable?
